These workshops provide a highly accessible resource to general art and design students. There are facilities for construction in wood, metal and plastics within a mixed-use workshop.
Woodworking equipment includes hand and power tools, supported by machinery such as a circular saw. Metalworking equipment includes a plasma cutter, mig welder and rolling machines. Plastics can be shaped on vacuum formers and a dome blower, in addition to fabrication by hand.
Adjacent to this is a ceramics workshop, with facilities for throwing and hand-building in clay. Sharing this room is a glass resource, allowing students to explore kiln-formed glass, pâte-de-verre and glass casting. Glass and ceramic firings take place in a kiln room equipped with digitally controlled kilns.
A further room is equipped for mould-making and casting in a wide range of materials, including plaster, wax and clay. This room can also be used for paper-making, both flat and three-dimensional, and felt-making.
Students using these facilities are assisted and supervised by staff with extensive practical experience gained in industry, the creative sector and education.
